Vicky’s Positive Birth

21st November 2018EmilyReal Birth StoriesNo comments
Recently, Vicky kindly took the time to share her positive birth with us. For anyone expecting all the birth stories shared on the Talking Babies Blog are written by new parents for parents-to-be. The are real. Every birth shared is special, unique and beautiful. Thank you Vicky for sharing Jessica’s birth. Such happy news!
‘Hey Emily, just wanted to introduce to you Jessica Amy 💗💗
Born Wednesday 14th November 1am at Hospital.

Skin to Skin with Daddy!

I went to the stand alone Birthing Centre after a few of hours at home. My contractions seemed painful so they examined me and found that I was 2cm. Unfortunately, my Blood Pressure was high so they advised me to go to a different maternity unit, just in case….(guess that made the decision for me, although I really wanted to stay – no one else was there and it was lovely!!).
We got to The Midwife led unit (which is alongside the consultant led delivery suite). And felt I needed to push! Got examined and I was at 10cm (no drugs or gas and air given until now!!!)
We ran the Pool, got me on gas and air and she came not long after!
Because the whole thing was 6 hours long she was a little shocked so she didn’t do that big cry, she was breathing but needed some more oxygen. She was on neonatal unit and I was on the ward which was hard for the first day but now we are both on the ward together.

I can’t wait to get her home.

Thank you for all the training! xx’

Talking Babies takes a closer look
There are two ares in need of focus in Vicky’s birth story.
1.  ‘Unfortunately my Blood Pressure was high’
2. ‘she didn’t do that big cry’ I have focused on this area before please go to Kate’s Second Birth
I think you will agree that Vicky did extremely well. Even when her birth place changed she was able to stay calm and focused which allowed her body to continue progressing well. This was very obvious when she arrived at 10 cm! She should feel so proud.
Blood Pressure changes in labour can be a concern because we know that the body has to work hard during labour. In hindsight the blood pressure increase was most likely down to the speed on Vicky’s first labour, But, professionals wont want to take that chance and they correctly advised Vicky to birth in a maternity unit equipped to better monitor for a pregnancy complication called Pre-Eclampsia (typically associated with raised blood pressure). Also if Vicky’s blood pressure continued to increase and became a greater concern they would be able to help.
It is great to hear that Vicky had a supportive team around her.
I am also really pleased that Vicky and Pete came to Talking Babies Antenatal classes and learnt all about the different places for birth, how plans might change, and how Doctors and Midwives can help stimulate little ones to breathe, if needed.  Which in turn has helped them to achieve a positive birth experience.
